The genus Catasetum is one of the most interesting in the family Orchidaceae.
The fact that plants can produce different flowers based on sexual dimorphism has puzzled botanists and cultivators alike since their discovery, and until even quite recently misidentifications have been ocurring based on this fact. Brazil is certainly the distribution center of the genus, with about 70% of its species being found in the Country. In this lecture we discuss the different types of habitats and most typical and showy species to be found on each.

The genus Laelia includes some of the showiest of all orchid species.
Here we will see most of the different habitats where Laelia species can be found in Brazil and the lecture is arranged as a trip from the south to the north of their distribution range.
We will also see the majority of the species and the variations many of these show.

The Amazon is the largest river basin in the World.
The Brazilian portion of it includes most of the Amazon plains and thus most of the lowland habitats. Although the variet of orchid species is less than the area covered would make one think, there are unique species to be found there.
The lecture presents the opportunit to discuss the most important of these habitats and orchid species.

One hundred new species of Epidendrum are proposed.
Epidendrum is one of the most diverse and widespread orchid genera in Tropical America.
The novelties are described from Florida in the United States to the Andes in Ecuador and Peru, as well as the Antilles, Mexico, Central America and Brazil.
Each species is illustrated by analytical drawing, most prepared from live plants and in all cases showing the structure that permit the recognition of the species.
Complete information on the type collection, and detailed morphological description, distribution, flowering time and recognition are given.
